This week, I had the opportunity to sit down with NBA legend Steve Nash — a two-time MVP, hall of famer, former Phoenix Suns star, and most recently, head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. He has proven himself a great leader under very high stakes. In part one of this two-part series, we covered everything from leadership and team culture to the importance of building great habits. Steve’s take on success is refreshingly grounded and incredibly relevant for leaders in any field.
— Leadership Is Everyone’s Job: Whether it’s on the court or in the office, great teams are built when everyone leads by owning their role. Everyone can star in their role by executing, being efficient, and having a good attitude. This leads to optimal culture.
— Authenticity Wins: Steve emphasized that real leadership isn’t about being the loudest — it’s about being genuine and having the right motives. People follow leaders who make them feel valued and supported. I love his line, “You build up a lot of equity with your teammates when they feel you genuinely want to see them succeed.”
— Embrace the Boring: The daily habits — eating right, practicing consistently, recovering properly — help build long-term success. Steve said it best: “When you have a passion for something, it leads to developing discipline to do it every day. Then that discipline refines great habits that build on top each other every day.”
